Four for Four

for flute, violin, double-bass and piano

Four Pieces for Four Friends. This set of character sketches was written for a group of friends with whom I regularly play chamber music. Our times together consist of music-making interspersed with tea-breaks and meals, lively conversations, and if the weather permits a hike. Our main repertoire has been Baroque trio sonatas, but the fact that all four of us are composers created the possibility and urge of writing new works. This is the first in which I hope are many by the group and for the group.
Each movement channels the spirit of a composer: Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), Maddalena Lombardi-Sirmen (1745-1818), Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983), and Steve Reich (1936- ). These too are our friends, even though they may be separated from us by time or geography. While they are unable to share in our social times, they have shared with us their music and we are enriched by their presence
