Film with live soundtrack

In this marvelously compact scene, we are introduced to the main characters of the film: Lem (the son) traveling by train to the big city to sell the family's wheat crop, Tustine (the domineering father, through a letter), the loving mother (through another letter), and a city girl (although it is not the same woman he falls in love with later in the film).

Excerpt from John F. Paul's score to FW Murnau's 1930 silent film City Girl. These two short scenes focus upon the crises in the two main characters's lives. In the first, a street scene, Lem learns that his mission to the sell the family's wheat crop will end in failure. In the midst of the hubbub of modern city life, Lem stands alone. In the second scene, we see Kate (the City Girl) in her sparse apartment, feeling trapped. Longing for a better existence, she wonders if life in the country might provide respite. These two concise scenes provide the backstory for Kate and Lem's developing relationship.

One of the highlights of FW Murnau's 1930 silent film City Girl is the wheat harvest scene. John F Paul's score is a passacaglia based upon the fragment "Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread".
